The Art of Compromise

A Study in Luxury Ecommerce: Why the brands winning online aren't doing everything. They're doing the right things, in the right balance.

There is a particular kind of meeting that happens in every ambitious brand's digital journey. The room, physical or virtual, usually contains a founder or CMO who wants the site to feel like the brand's best editorial shoot, a Head of Ecommerce who wants conversion rates that would make a performance marketer weep with joy, a technical lead nervous about load times, and an SEO manager who has a list of things that need to go on every product page.

The assumption that sits beneath most ecommerce briefs, spoken or not, is that a great digital experience should be able to do it all – beautiful and fast, rich and lean, brand-forward and conversion-optimised, discoverable and elegant. The brief arrives, and the agency nods, and somewhere between ambition and execution, the compromises begin.

Except they are rarely called compromises. They are called "phased," or "to be revisited," or simply left unaddressed until the numbers demand a conversation nobody planned for.

This article is about making those compromises deliberately. Not as a concession to limitation, but as an act of craft.
